Types of Hot Water Units

Electric hot water system

Electric hot water units are a popular choice for providing hot water in homes and businesses. They work by using an electric heating element to heat the water stored in a tank, which is then available for use whenever hot water is needed.

One of the main advantages of electric hot water units is that they are relatively easy to install and maintain and they have a low upfront cost. They are also efficient in terms of energy use, as they only heat the amount of water that is needed and are not affected by external factors such as cold weather.

However, there are also some drawbacks to electric hot water units. They can be more expensive to operate over the long term, as electricity prices are generally higher than gas prices. Additionally, they may not be suitable for homes or businesses that experience frequent power outages, as this can cause the unit to stop working and result in a lack of hot water.

Overall, electric hot water units can be a good choice for those who want an easy-to-install and efficient hot water system, but it’s important to consider the potential ongoing costs of electricity and the reliability of the unit before making a decision.

Solar-powered hot water systems

Solar hot water units are an eco-friendly and energy-efficient option for providing hot water in homes and businesses. They work by using solar panels to collect energy from the sun and heat the water stored in a tank.

One of the main advantages of solar hot water units is that they can significantly reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions, as they rely on renewable energy from the sun. They are also durable and have a long lifespan, with some systems lasting up to 25 years with proper maintenance.

However, there are also some potential drawbacks to solar hot water units. They can have a higher upfront cost than other hot water systems, which can be a barrier for some homeowners or businesses. Additionally, they may not be as effective in colder or cloudier climates, as they rely on direct sunlight to heat the water.

Overall, solar hot water units can be a great choice for those who want an eco-friendly and cost-effective hot water system, especially in sunny climates. It’s important to carefully consider the upfront cost and climate factors before making a decision, but for those who can afford the initial investment, a solar hot water system can provide significant long-term benefits.

Gas hot water system

Gas hot water units are a reliable and cost-effective option for providing hot water in homes and businesses. They work by using a gas burner to heat the water stored in a tank or instantaneously as it passes through the unit.

One of the main advantages of gas hot water units is that they are relatively inexpensive to operate, as natural gas is often cheaper than electricity. They are also able to provide hot water even during power outages, which can be important for some homeowners or businesses.

However, there are also some potential drawbacks to gas hot water units. They can be more expensive to install than electric units, and they require a gas connection which may not be available in all areas. Additionally, they are not as energy-efficient as solar hot water systems and they may produce more greenhouse gas emissions than other hot water options.

Overall, gas hot water units can be a good choice for those who want a reliable and cost-effective hot water system, particularly if a gas connection is already available. It’s important to consider the upfront cost, ongoing operating costs and environmental impact before making a decision.

I have used several plumbers to fix some leak and blocked pipes in our old 1970’s rental house - most plumbers charged a lot and the problem never went away. Some did not want to deal with old clay pipes. I tried Historic Plumbing as they deal with old houses and earthenware pipes - Tom unblocked and fixed the problem thoroughly - we haven’t had any issues with the pipes in that house so far (10 months ago). Now they have replaced a toilet suite in our new house. Again, Anthony did a proper job - he was careful & thorough, fixed issues with the pipe connection, and did not mind explaining whatever I asked about the new toilet suite. I would recommend this company especially if you have some plumbing issues that can’t be fixed - Tom will give you an honest answer whether they can tackle it or not. Their price is fair and not exorbitant, and so far they have done a very good job with all of our plumbing needs.
